Club  Secretary

NORTHERN’S UK

Chelian Alal

I am delighted to share this message as we celebrate the 30th Anniversary of Northern Sports Club in the UK. This milestone honors three decades of legacy, passion, and community, made even more special by our teams’ outstanding achievements this year—a true testament to the hard work and excellence that define our club.

Both our 1st and 2nd teams have triumphed as champions in BTCL’s(British Tamil Cricket League) Premier Division and Legend Division (Third Tier), respectively. This marks the 8th Premier Division title for our 1st team in the 19-year history of BTCL—an incredible accomplishment. We are immensely proud to be the only club to have remained in the Premier Division for all 19 years and to be the only club to have achieved the double of winning the BTCL Premier Division and ETCL Premier Division in the same year during the period of ETCL’s existence.

These achievements reflect the dedication and hard work of many individuals. Mr. Kugan has proudly carried the Northern flag for the last two decades, supported steadfastly by Club Captain Mr Nehru and Club Manager Mr GT Gajen.Together, they have played a pivotal role in maintaining our legacy of excellence.

Success has defined Northern from the very beginning. In our inaugural year, we won the Quickstop League 2nd Division and the Brent Six-a-Side Tournament. The following year, our 1st Team achieved a double championship in the Quickstop League 1st Division and the Ceylon Cricket League, along with victory in the Morning Star one-day tournament. These achievements were made possible by the tireless efforts of S. Thevaraj, who led the club during its first decade, supported by many others who laid our strong foundation. During this time, Northern’s football team, guided by Annathurai, also emerged as champions.

While we gather here to celebrate 30 years of Northern in the UK, it is essential to honor our roots, which stretch back to the early 1970s in Nallur, Jaffna, Sri Lanka. The club began as a competitive softball cricket team under the leadership of Mr. Suresh Thuraisingham, whose passion for sports inspired and funded the club’s early years. During this time, Northern enjoyed the privilege of exclusive access to Senguntha Hindu College grounds, hosting and winning numerous softball cricket tournaments. It was also during this period that Northern’s football and volleyball teams were formed, achieving notable success in various competitions.

In the mid-1980s, Northern’s cricket team transitioned to leather ball cricket thanks to the vision and efforts of Mr. Sharma, affectionately called Om Aiyaa. He provided invaluable training and financial support to young players, working alongside committed individuals such as Mr. Sangaralingam and Mr. Mariyathas.

The displacement of our community brought many of us to different parts of the world. By the mid to late 1980s, several Northern cricketers had arrived in the UK and joined the Greenford Cricket Club and United Colts Cricket Club. In 1994, these two teams united to form what we now proudly call the Northern Sports Club UK.

Beyond the trophies and championships, Northern Sports Club has always been a home—a place where friendships are forged, and a shared love for sports unites us across borders and generations.

The future is bright for our club as we launch a 3rd team next season, creating opportunities for young talent and senior players alike. This reflects our commitment to nurturing the next generation while honoring our experienced members, ensuring Northern’s continued success

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the past players, captains, managers, and officials for their continued support and guidance. Your unwavering dedication has been the cornerstone of our success.

I sincerely hope you all enjoy this special evening, celebrating the past, present, and future of Northern Sports Club.

Thank you.
